more maz

I do not mean to be overly critical but I have a schematic of a DR Z Maz 38 that I used to like a lot before the cacophony of power supply hum, fan whine and an outrageous reverb ground loop type hum started to piss me off everytime I turned on the amp.Reading the schematic the amp seems to be a sort of super reverb pre-amp with a VOX class A power section. Problem is that the circuit seems to be a bit under engineered. Class A designs tend to be noisy and run hot and require careful engineering. You can't just slap a class A power section on a super without making some mods. Take a look at the output tranny of the Maz. I would not call it tiny but it is about 1/3 the size of the out put transformer on a matchless. As a matter of fact it is smaller than a Super reverb tranny and WAY smaller than the transformer in the Fender concert. According to the schematic, the reverb section resistor values are the same on both amps. I don't know dick about amp design ( but at least I don't build them!!) but after staring at the schematic for a while it is apparent that the highest voltage preamp tube in a super or a MAZ 38 is the reverb driver /dry wet summer. This tube adds the reverb and the other half sends the dry signal directly to the power tubes. Why would the resistance values be the same when one tube is feeding a 38 watt class A power section cathode biased at 340 volts and the other is feeding a 45 watt class A/B fixed bias power section??The presence control on the Maz is also scratchy due to the " voltage on the pot"??? Whaaaaa??. Sounds like someone should have spent a little more time engineering the negative feedback loop in this amp. The Master volume is superb on the Maz so perhaps that was the focus of the design. But .....It is out of the shootout before we fire the first shot. It has real good tone but it is just too crude compared to my other amps in terms of noise and heat generated. The amps do sound very good but if everyone just rants about how great they are the design won't get refined . Will it? I could be wrong about the design issues but I prefer my 1965 Fender Super reverb to the MAZ if that tells you anything about amp design developement and the genius of Leo Fender and Doc Kaufmann
