DORIANETICS ???

Dorianetics is our method of playing the guitar and approach to music theory. It is also a unique and simplified way to learn to play much better solos.

  1. The object of any guitar solo is to play a melody over the chord changes of the song that you are playing. Forget about music theory. Hear the chord changes. What would you hum or sing over the changes? Play that.Music theory is just a way to keep you in bounds while you wank around on your solo when you have no idea what you want to say musically. Like Miles Davis said , Music is a conversation . When you have nothing to say don't talk nonsense, shut the fuck up. What you need to know about the guitar is : what notes you want to sing with it and where those sounds are located on the fretboard. For soloing that is all you need to know. Period You would be shocked at how many people can wail on and on with a guitar solo but couldn't pick out a simple melody like The Flinstones theme or the Star Spangled Banner .That is simply because they do not know which fret positions make what sounds .If you can sing any melody that you cannot play then you need to practice playing MELODIES .It is so simple it makes your head hurt.

  2.   You do need music theory to learn to name and construct chords. You are not supposed to be thinking about it while you are playing a solo though. Think of it this way. If you are listening to and hearing the chord changes, you know what you want to sing with the guitar and you know where the notes you want to play are located. What else is there? If the chords don't suggest an obvious melody it 99.9% likely to be a shitty song any way and these rules apply to changes worth soloing over. Not some hyper- extended chord horseshit someone came up with because they thought it sounded "modern" or "edgey".

  3. " But what about scales and modes?"

The only thing you have to remember about modes is to forget about them unless it is the Dorian mode of course. This mode can add a lot of spice to your playing by juxtaposing the major second over the root ala' steely dan. If you don't know what the fuck I'm talking about learn some theory so you can ignore it later.

The way you play a solo in Dorian mode is if you are in the key of G you start your solo from an A . Pretty tough huh? Try it.
